Sedation & General Anesthesia

Sedation & General Anesthesia

Most people feel some apprehension when visiting the dentist. Children can feel the same way especially if they are not used to going to the dentist or have challenges adjusting to new environments. At Park Slope Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics, we understand that some children may have more anxiety than others. We want all children to have a relaxed and enjoyable time no matter what procedures need to be done. For your child’s comfort we provide a variety of sedation and general anesthesia.

Oral Sedation for a Relaxing Dental Experience

Some patients need just a little extra help in order to get fully relaxed and able to handle dental procedures. We have oral sedation available for these youngsters. Within minutes they feel more comfortable and less agitated. This works well for kids who are too anxious and unable to relax or those who simply are not able to sit still during dental treatment. Since it is administered orally, there is not the anxiety that comes from anticipating an injection. With oral sedation, your child is still able to respond to voices and stimulation. Protective reflexes will remain active.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

For generations, nitrous oxide or laughing gas as it is most commonly known, has been around helping dental patients relax during procedures. This form of sedation works well for children who are mildly or moderately nervous about what is going to happen. The gas eases their fears and helps them relax into a pleasant state. It is administered along with oxygen through a mask that fits over the nose and mouth. This is a safe method of sedation that has a long history of use. It only works as long as it is being used. When the gas is turned off the effects wear off quickly. The oxygen will continued to be used for a few minutes to clear out the gas from your child’s system.

Minimal In-Office Sedation to Hospital Based Anesthesia

At Park Slope Pediatric Dental, we want to ensure that your child has the best possible dental experience. We offer a variety of levels of sedation to accommodate the diversity of the children we work on. So whether your child only needs a little help to relax or needs to be completely sedated so that necessary work can be accomplished, we can provide it. Your child’s comfort is of concern to us.
